Big Bluestem 'Blackhawks'

Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks' is a striking cultivar of Big Bluestem, a prairie grass that brings architectural height and dramatic colour to UK gardens. While big bluestem is native to North America, 'Blackhawks' has been specifically bred for its intensified colour. Its upright stems emerge green, rapidly transitioning to a deep purple-black hue by mid-summer, becoming almost black as autumn progresses. This provides a stunning, bold statement in the garden. Delicate, three-pronged flower spikes appear in late summer. It's a warm-season grass that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating a range of conditions once established, and offers superb winter interest. Ideal for prairie planting, borders, or as a strong vertical accent in contemporary designs.
