Toothpick Plant 'The Queen of Africa'
'The Queen of Africa' is a more compact and sturdy selection of Ammi visnaga, which is often preferred in UK gardens over its taller relative Ammi majus. It produces dense, dome-shaped umbels of tiny white flowers that look like intricate lace. As the flowers age, they become more solid and architectural, eventually folding inwards. The foliage is incredibly fine and fern-like, providing a beautiful textural contrast in the border. It grows to around 90-100cm and is much less likely to flop than other umbellifers. It is a hardy annual that is best sown in autumn for a stronger plant or in early spring for summer flowers. It is highly attractive to hoverflies and other beneficial insects. It makes a superb cut flower, providing a sophisticated 'filler' for bouquets. It thrives in a sunny position in well-drained soil and is very reliable in the British climate.
