Amelanchier lamarckii, often called the Snowy Mespilus, is a multi-talented deciduous plant that makes a spectacular informal hedge. It offers a "four-season" display that few plants can match. In early spring, just as the leaves emerge with a bronze-pink tint, the plant is covered in a cloud of delicate, star-shaped white flowers. These are followed by small, dark purple-black berries in summer which are highly prized by birds. In autumn, the foliage turns a breathtaking range of fiery oranges and reds before falling. It has a graceful, upright habit and is very hardy, coping well with both acidic and neutral soils. While it can be pruned into a more formal shape, it is best used as a loose, naturalistic screen where its form can be appreciated. It is a fantastic choice for a wildlife-friendly garden and works well in both rural and urban settings, provided it has reasonable moisture and light.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained, acidic to neutral soil.
Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
Flowering: Mar, Apr.
