Joseph's coat 'Early Splendor'

Amaranthus tricolor 'Early Splendor' is grown primarily for its spectacular and intensely coloured foliage rather than its flowers. This half-hardy annual features large, pointed leaves that emerge a dark chocolate-maroon and then transform at the tips into a brilliant, glowing crimson-pink. It creates a bold, tropical statement in a UK summer border, reaching heights of around 60-90cm. To achieve the most vibrant leaf colours, it must be grown in a sunny position; in too much shade, the colours will be duller. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and a sheltered spot as the stems can be somewhat brittle in strong winds. It is an excellent choice for adding vertical interest and a splash of high-octane colour to the middle of a border. In the UK, it is typically started from seed indoors in spring and planted out once all risk of frost has passed. It is also a striking plant for large patio containers.
