Prince-of-Wales feather 'Pygmy Torch'

'Pygmy Torch' is a compact and striking annual that provides architectural interest and intense colour in the UK garden. Unlike its larger relatives, this cultivar stays at a manageable height of 40-60cm. It produces upright, dense spikes of deep, velvety crimson-burgundy flowers that look like tongues of flame, set against dark green foliage often tinged with purple. It is a half-hardy annual, meaning it needs a warm start indoors in early spring and should only be planted out once the UK nights have warmed up significantly in June. It thrives in hot, sunny positions and can tolerate relatively dry soils once established. It is a fantastic plant for the middle of a border or for adding a dramatic touch to large patio containers. The flower spikes are very long-lasting and can be used in fresh or dried floral arrangements, retaining their rich colour well.
