Snake Aloe
Aloe broomii is a spectacular architectural succulent known for its unusual flowering habit. It forms a large, solitary rosette of pale green leaves with very sharp, dark brown teeth along the margins. When it reaches maturity, it produces a massive, unbranched flower spike where the individual flowers are almost completely hidden by large, papery bracts, giving the inflorescence the appearance of a scaly snake or a giant candle. This bloom is a magnet for bees and birds in its native South Africa. In the UK, it is rated H2 and is best grown in a large pot that can be moved into a greenhouse for winter. It requires maximum light to maintain its robust form and prevent the leaves from stretching. Once established, it is extremely drought-tolerant. Its formidable appearance and unique 'snake' bloom make it a prized specimen for collectors of exotic plants.
