Garlic 'Solent Wight'
'Solent Wight' is widely considered the finest softneck garlic variety for UK cultivation, specifically adapted to the maritime climate of the British Isles. Developed on the Isle of Wight, it produces large, elegant bulbs with a strong, complex aroma and exceptional flavor that is neither too harsh nor too mild. As a softneck variety, it has excellent storage potential, often remaining in good condition for up to nine months after harvest. It should be planted in the late autumn to allow for a period of winter chilling, which is essential for bulb development. It prefers a free-draining, sunny site; waterlogged soil in winter will cause the cloves to rot. The foliage is typical of garlic—long, strap-like blue-green leaves. In summer, the leaves will naturally begin to yellow and wither, signaling that the bulbs are ready for lifting. It is an RHS Award of Garden Merit recipient, esteemed for its reliability and quality.
