Onion 'Sturon'
A classic and highly reliable onion variety, 'Sturon' has long been a favourite in UK allotments. It produces medium to large, round-to-oval bulbs with a crisp, white flesh and a fine, straw-yellow skin. This cultivar is prized for its excellent storage qualities, staying firm and usable well into the winter months. It shows good resistance to bolting, making it suitable for early spring sowing. Best grown from sets for ease, it prefers a site with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil that has been well-manured for a previous crop. In the UK climate, it is extremely hardy and easy to maintain, requiring little more than regular weeding and watering during dry spells. The flavour is mildly pungent, making it versatile for both raw use in salads and various culinary applications like roasting or stewing. It is an essential staple for any vegetable patch.
