Shallot 'Zebrune'

Commonly known as a 'banana' shallot due to its elongated, torpedo-like shape, 'Zebrune' is a highly prized culinary variety. It produces beautiful bulbs with brownish-pink skin and a mild, sweet flavor that is less pungent than standard onions, making it excellent for gourmet cooking, salads, and pickling. Unlike some shallots that are grown from sets, 'Zebrune' is frequently grown from seed, which reduces the risk of virus transmission. It is a reliable performer in the UK, showing good resistance to bolting. The plants produce upright, cylindrical hollow green leaves. Success depends on a well-prepared seedbed with good drainage to prevent bulb rot during wet spells. Harvest occurs in late summer once the foliage has turned yellow and collapsed. The bulbs store exceptionally well, often lasting into the following spring if kept in a cool, dry, dark place. They are a staple in French cuisine and increasingly popular in British kitchen gardens.
