Shallot 'Longor'

'Longor' is a superior Jersey-type shallot that produces distinctive, elongated, banana-shaped bulbs with a beautiful copper-coloured skin. It is widely considered one of the best varieties for culinary use due to its fine, mild, yet complex flavour and the ease with which its long bulbs can be peeled and sliced. In the UK, it is typically grown from "sets" (small bulbs) planted in early spring (March or April). Each set will divide and grow into a cluster of 6-8 new shallots. 'Longor' is particularly valued for its heavy yields and its excellent resistance to bolting, making it more reliable than many other varieties in the variable British climate. It also has an impressive storage life, often lasting for six to eight months if kept in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated place. For best results, plant in a sunny spot in fertile, well-drained soil and ensure the area is kept free of weeds. Harvest when the foliage turns yellow and begins to fall over in mid-to-late summer.
