Leek 'Musselburgh'
'Musselburgh' is an iconic heritage leek variety, first introduced near Edinburgh in the 1830s, and it remains a staple of British winter gardening due to its legendary hardiness. It is a 'mid-winter' type, producing short, thick stems with an exceptionally large diameter and a very white blanched base. The foliage is a distinctive fan shape and has a deep blue-green hue. It can withstand the harshest UK winters and can be left in the ground to be harvested as needed from December through to April. The flavor is mild and sweet, becoming even more refined after it has been exposed to frost. Leeks require a long growing season and are typically sown in a seedbed in early spring before being 'dropped' into deep holes in their final positions in mid-summer. It is a reliable, heavy-cropping choice that is essential for making traditional dishes like cock-a-leekie soup or creamy leek and potato gratin.
