Elephant Garlic

Elephant Garlic (Allium ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum) is technically a type of leek, producing enormous bulbs with a much milder, sweeter garlic flavour than true garlic. Its impressive size makes it a garden novelty. This hardy perennial (H5), grown as an annual, reaches an ultimate height of 1m (scapes) and a spread of 20cm. Plant in autumn or spring, harvesting bulbs in summer. It thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. The tall flower stalks (scapes) produce beautiful purple, spherical flower heads, attractive to pollinators. A striking and delicious addition to the vegetable plot.
