Ornamental Onion 'Ambassador'
Allium 'Ambassador' is one of the most impressive and tallest ornamental onions available to UK gardeners. It produces immense, perfectly spherical flower heads (up to 15-20cm in diameter) composed of hundreds of tiny, star-shaped, rich purple flowers. These giant globes sit atop sturdy, architectural stems that can reach 1.2m to 1.5m in height. One of the key advantages of 'Ambassador' over other large alliums is that its foliage remains green for longer, whereas many other varieties see their leaves turn brown before the flowers have even fully opened. It provides a striking vertical accent in late spring and early summer borders and is highly attractive to bees and butterflies. The dried seed heads remain attractive long after flowering, adding structure to the garden in autumn. It is fully hardy and requires a sunny position in well-drained soil to thrive and return annually.
