Hair Grass

Aira caryophyllea, commonly known as Silver Hair Grass or Hair Grass, is a delicate annual grass that, despite its small stature, can create a shimmering effect in the garden. It forms very slender, upright stems topped with airy, open panicles of tiny, silvery-green florets in late spring and early summer. These inflorescences are incredibly fine and catch the light beautifully, giving the impression of a misty cloud. While often seen as a weed in lawns, when allowed to grow in a more naturalistic setting or container, it provides an exquisite, light, and ephemeral texture. It thrives in well-drained, even poor, soils and full sun. It's excellent for adding a 'filler' element in rockeries or between paving, where its delicate beauty can be appreciated.
