Artichoke Agave
This subspecies of the Parry's Agave is renowned for its impeccable symmetry and tight, globe-like form, closely resembling a giant artichoke. The wide, thick, silver-grey leaves are tipped with sharp, dark brown terminal spines and decorated with distinct imprints from the previous leaves' margins. It is one of the hardier Agaves for UK enthusiasts, classified as H4, meaning it can survive many winters outdoors if kept predominantly dry. The key to success is providing a raised bed or a container with gravel-rich compost and perhaps overhead protection from winter rain. Over many years, it may produce a towering flower spike with yellow blossoms, though, like most Agaves, this marks the end of the main plant's life. It will, however, produce offsets (pups) around its base. Its striking architectural silhouette makes it a premium choice for modern, minimalist gardens or Mediterranean-themed landscapes where structure and form are paramount.
