Thorncrest Agave 'Quadricolor'
This striking Agave is a highly ornamental succulent featuring narrow, sword-like leaves that display four distinct colours: deep green, lime green, yellow, and a reddish tint along the teeth when grown in bright light. It is relatively compact, reaching about 30cm in height, making it ideal for large containers or gravel gardens in the UK. While it is hardier than many Agaves, rated at H3, it still requires protection from winter wet to prevent crown rot. In summer, it produces small offsets that can be easily propagated. Its architectural form provides a dramatic focal point in a drought-tolerant border. It rarely flowers in the UK climate, but when it does, a tall spike emerges before the mother plant dies back. Growth is slow but steady, requiring minimal irrigation once established in a free-draining, grit-heavy growing medium. It is an excellent choice for a contemporary garden design.
