Red Horse Chestnut
The Red Horse Chestnut, Aesculus x carnea, is a majestic deciduous tree that brings a spectacular splash of colour to larger UK gardens and parklands. In late spring to early summer, it produces magnificent, upright panicles of vibrant rose-pink to red flowers, often with a yellow throat, creating a truly stunning display. These are followed by prickly, but often less spiny than common horse chestnut, fruits containing conkers. It forms a dense, rounded crown, typically reaching 10-15 metres, providing excellent shade. It is remarkably tolerant of urban pollution and thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. A grand and stately specimen tree for substantial spaces.
