Mountain Rose
Formerly classified as Greenovia dodrantalis, this exquisite succulent is a must-have for lovers of geometric plants. It forms small, dense rosettes of fleshy, blue-green leaves that overlap so tightly they perfectly resemble a budding rose bloom. During its summer dormancy, the rosettes close up even further into a protective ball. When the weather cools in autumn and winter, the 'rose' opens up to reveal its full beauty. In late spring, mature plants may produce clusters of small, buttery-yellow flowers. It is a tender plant (H2), so in the UK it is strictly for a heated greenhouse or a bright indoor windowsill. It prefers a slightly more organic but still very free-draining soil compared to desert cacti and enjoys a bit more water during its winter growing season. It is a relatively small plant, rarely exceeding 6cm in diameter per rosette, making it a perfect specimen for a small, decorative ceramic pot.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Loam-based with added grit or perlite.
Hardiness: H2 — down to 1°C.
