Calico Hearts
This charming, low-growing succulent from South Africa is a favourite for its beautifully marked foliage. Adromischus maculatus features thick, flat, heart-shaped or round leaves that are a pale grey-green, heavily mottled with dark purple or chocolate-brown spots. The margins of the leaves often have a thin, reddish edge. It forms small clumps and is perfect for a bright windowsill or a specialized succulent collection. In the UK, it is tender (H2) and requires protection from frost at all times. In summer, it may produce tall, thin stems with insignificant, tubular, greenish-white flowers, but the plant is primarily grown for its decorative leaves. It is very sensitive to overwatering; it is crucial to let the soil dry out completely between waterings, especially in the winter when the plant is largely dormant. It prefers a bright position with some direct morning or evening sun to maintain the intensity of its leaf spotting.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Sharply drained, gritty mix.
