Western Maidenhair Fern 'Japonicum'
This elegant deciduous fern is a visual delight in British gardens, known for its distinctive architectural structure. Unlike some maidenhairs, 'Japonicum' is notably hardy, producing delicate fronds that emerge with a stunning pinkish-bronze hue in spring before maturing to a soft, bright green. The fronds are held on near-black, wiry stalks (stipes) and are arranged in a fan-like, pedate shape. It typically reaches a height and spread of around 45-60cm. This cultivar thrives in the cool, damp climates of the UK, particularly in the North and West. It requires a sheltered position away from drying winds, which can scorch the delicate pinnae. While it is slow to establish, it eventually forms a graceful, spreading clump that works beautifully in a woodland garden or a shady border alongside hostas and tiarellas. It prefers moisture-retentive but well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
