Slender Sweet Flag 'Variegatus'

Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus' is a fantastic, low-growing marginal plant that provides year-round interest. This evergreen perennial forms neat, fan-shaped tufts of narrow, grass-like leaves that are boldly striped with creamy-white and bright green. Unlike its larger relative Acorus calamus, this species remains compact, usually reaching about 20-30cm in height, making it ideal for smaller ponds, streamside plantings, or even between stones at the water's edge. The foliage is pleasantly aromatic when crushed, emitting a sweet, spicy scent. It is very hardy (H6) and is remarkably versatile, thriving in damp soil or shallow water up to 5cm deep. It performs well in both full sun and partial shade. Because its foliage remains attractive throughout the winter in most parts of the UK, it is a valuable plant for maintaining structure and color when other aquatic plants have died back.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Wet soil or very shallow water.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.

Flowering: Jun, Jul.
