Full Moon Maple 'Vitifolium'

Acer japonicum 'Vitifolium' is an exceptional small deciduous tree that offers some of the most intense autumn colours in the world of maples. Its name, 'Vitifolium', refers to its large, fan-like leaves that resemble those of a grapevine. In spring and summer, the leaves are a lush, deep green, providing a soft background for the small, reddish-purple flowers. However, in autumn, the tree transforms into a blazing display of brilliant oranges, crimsons, and golds. It grows into a spreading, rounded shape and is quite slow-growing, making it perfect for smaller gardens or large containers. It is fully hardy (H6) but, like many Acers, it should be situated away from strong winds and late frosts to protect its foliage. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Partial shade is ideal for preventing leaf scorch, but some sun is needed to trigger its spectacular autumn transformation. It is a quintessential choice for Japanese-style or woodland gardens.
