Cappadocian Maple 'Aureum'
'Aureum' is a striking cultivar of the Cappadocian Maple, notable for the vibrant colour changes of its foliage. The five-lobed leaves emerge in spring a bright, glowing yellow, occasionally tinged with red. By midsummer, the foliage matures to a soft lime-green, before returning to a luminous gold in the autumn. This medium-sized deciduous tree has a dense, rounded habit and smooth, greenish bark that adds winter interest. It is a relatively tough tree, hardy to H6, but the delicate yellow leaves can be scorched by strong, direct summer sun or desiccating winds, so a partially shaded, sheltered site is ideal. It grows well in most fertile, well-drained soils and is particularly effective when planted against a dark background to highlight the golden foliage. Like most maples, it benefits from a regular mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. It is an excellent choice for a garden needing a splash of long-lasting, bright colour.
