Spiny bear's breeches
Acanthus spinosus is a dramatic, architectural perennial that has been a staple of the English flower garden for centuries. It is famous for its deeply incised, dark green, glossy leaves which feature sharp spines, providing a bold texture even when not in bloom. In summer, it sends up impressive tall spikes of white flowers, each protected by a sharp, hooded, purple-tinged bract. These striking flower spires are excellent for cutting and can even be dried for winter arrangements. It is a very hardy and robust plant that performs best in a sunny position with well-drained soil, though it can tolerate partial shade. Once established, Acanthus can be difficult to remove due to its deep root system, so it is best to choose its position carefully. It is particularly effective in a Mediterranean-style garden or as a focal point in a large herbaceous border where its statuesque form can be fully appreciated.
