Spanish Fir 'Aurea'

Abies pinsapo 'Aurea' is a stunning golden cultivar of the Spanish Fir, noted for its unique, stiff, needle-like leaves that are arranged radially around the stems, giving the branches a bottle-brush appearance. The new growth is a brilliant, bright yellow, which gradually softens to a more limey green as the season progresses. This tree is slow-growing and develops a neat, conical habit. It is hardy (H6) in most of the UK but requires a sunny, well-drained spot and protection from very cold, drying winds that can damage the new growth. It is more tolerant of chalky and alkaline soils than many other Abies species, making it a good choice for gardeners on the South Downs or across East Anglia. The golden foliage provides a wonderful year-round highlight in a larger garden or conifer collection. While it can eventually grow quite large, its slow growth rate means it remains manageable for many years. It is an architectural gem that adds a distinct Mediterranean flair to the landscape.
