Korean Fir selection 'Kohouts Icebreaker'
Abies koreana 'Kohout's Icebreaker' is a truly remarkable dwarf conifer that originated as a "witch's broom" on the popular 'Silberlocke' cultivar. It is a slow-growing, miniature evergreen that forms a dense, flattened globe. Its most striking feature is the way its needles are curled dramatically backwards, revealing their bright, silvery-white undersides. This gives the entire plant a shimmering, frost-covered appearance, even in the middle of summer. It is a perfect choice for rock gardens, trough containers, or the front of a small border where its unique texture can be appreciated. It is fully hardy (H6) and, like all Korean Firs, it has the delightful habit of producing upright, violet-blue cones even on young plants. It prefers moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil and a position in full sun to partial shade. This is a real gem for conifer collectors and anyone looking for a high-impact, small-scale plant with year-round interest and a touch of the magical.
