Delavay's Silver Fir

Abies delavayi is a handsome, medium-sized evergreen conifer that brings a sense of the mountains to a UK garden. It is highly prized for its decorative cones, which are a striking deep blue or violet-purple and stand upright on the branches like candles. The needles are dark green and glossy with two vivid white bands on the undersides, creating a shimmering effect when the wind catches the foliage. It has a neat, pyramidal habit and is remarkably hardy (H6). Originally from the high altitudes of China and Burma, it thrives in the cooler, moister regions of the UK, such as Scotland, the North of England, and Wales. It prefers moist, acidic to neutral, well-drained soil and does not perform well in very dry sites or polluted urban environments. It is a slow-to-medium grower, making it a sustainable choice for a large rock garden, woodland edge, or as a structural specimen in a lawn where its unique cones can be appreciated up close.
