White Fir 'Compacta'
Abies concolor 'Compacta' is a dwarf, slow-growing version of the White Fir, prized for its exceptionally beautiful foliage. It forms an irregular, broadly conical shrub with long, thick, upward-curving needles. The needles are a striking silvery blue-grey on both sides, providing some of the best blue colouration available in the fir family. This conifer is very hardy (H7) and is well-adapted to the UK climate, being more tolerant of urban pollution and drought than many other Abies species. Its slow growth rate makes it ideal for smaller gardens, rockeries, or as a specimen plant where its intense colour can be appreciated. It prefers a position in full sun to maintain its blue hue and requires well-drained soil. Over time, it develops a rugged, architectural character. Because it is slow-growing and maintains its height well, it is a low-maintenance choice for adding year-round structure and cool-toned colour to the landscape.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained, neutral to acidic loam.
Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
