Balsam Fir 'Hudsonia'

'Hudsonia' is a genuine dwarf conifer, forming a flat-topped, spreading mound of very dense, dark green needles. The foliage is short and aromatic, releasing the classic "pine" scent associated with balsam firs when brushed against. This plant is incredibly slow-growing, making it an ideal choice for trough gardens, alpine houses, or very small rockery pockets. It is fully hardy (H7) but, like many firs from mountainous regions, it prefers a climate with cool summers and consistent moisture. In the UK, it should be planted in a position that doesn't get baked in the summer heat and in soil that is moist but well-drained and acidic. It provides a lovely, stable evergreen presence and its fine texture contrasts well with broader-leaved alpines. Over many years, it may develop a slightly more tiered appearance but remains very low to the ground.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
